Montana Governor Steve Bullock proclaims November 19, 2015, as National Rural Health Day in Montana. The Montana Office of Rural Health requested the proclamation to draw attention to the wide range of issues that impact rural health. With 65 percent of Montanans residing in rural areas, Montana nationally ranks as one of the states with the highest number of rural residents.
The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) established National Rural Health Day in 2011 to showcase rural America, increase awareness of rural health issues and promote the efforts of NOSORH, State Offices of Rural Health and others that address these issues. “All Montanans should have access to the health care they need, regardless of location, so they can lead healthy, productive lives,” stated Governor Bullock. “That’s why the work of the Montana Office of Rural Health is so important.”
To celebrate the good work being done to achieve health care access and equity in Montana, the Montana Office of Rural Health and Area Health Education Center hosted two contests and will be awarding the Frank Newman Award to three recipients who exemplify a commitment to rural health in Montana. Award recipients for both the Frank Newman Award and the rural health photo contest will be announced November 19, 2015, on the Montana Rural Health Initiative website and the Montana Office of Rural Health and Area Health Education Center website.
