Promoting Interoperability – 2018 EP Medicaid Reporting

June 28, 2018, 2018
Written by Patty Kosednar

The 2018 program year for the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program, now called Promoting Interoperability (PI), is now underway. Providers who are eligible (EPs) for the Medicaid program can receive an incentive payment for up to six years. The Medicaid PI program runs through 2021 and the last year you could begin to report was 2016.

To prepare for 2018 reporting you will want to:

  1. Review the Medicaid PI requirements for 2018 (see below)
  2. Verify your provider’s eligibility
  3. Run your core objective and clinical quality measures (CQM) PI reports and compare them to the performance threshold requirements
  4. Update your security risk assessment and meet other yes/no attestation measures

For 2018, eligible providers can choose to report Modified Stage 2 or Stage 3 requirements (your choice). Below is additional information for reporting in 2018:

Modified Stage 2

  • CEHRT – You have the option to attest using EHR technology certified to the 2014 edition, 2015 edition or a combination of the two.
  • Reporting Period
    • For core objectives = 90 continuous days from Jan. 1 thru Dec. 31
    • For CQMs = full year
  • Program Requirements –
    • Medicaid – There are 10 core objective measures and six CQM requirements. See more detailed information on the Modified Stage 2 program requirements on the CMS webpage.

Stage 3

  • CEHRT – You have the option to attest using EHR technology certified to the 2015 edition or a combination of the 2014 and 2015 CEHRT editions, if the EHR technology can support the functionalities, objectives and measures for Stage 3.
  • Reporting Period
    • For core objectives = 90 continuous days from Jan. 1 thru Dec. 31
    • For CQMs = full year
  • Program Requirements
    • Medicaid – There are eight core objective measures and six CQM requirements. See more detailed information on the Stage 3 program requirements on the CMS webpage.

*Always check with your State Medicaid office to verify their specific criteria.
