Info on PQRS Measure Groups

September 30, 2016
Written by Sarah Leake

Let’s clarify, “right off the bat”,  that reporting Measure Groups is only available if reporting individually and using the Registry submission method.  It is not available if you have chosen GPRO, but is available if you are in a group and are still electing to report individually within the group TIN.

A measure group is defined as a subset of individual PQRS measures that have a particular clinical condition or focus in common. For 2016 there are 25 measure groups from which you can choose which may have 6 to 10 measures within the group.  A minimum 20 patient sample must be reported with at least 11 of the patients being Medicare FFS Part B.  All applicable measures within the group must be reported for all patients in the sample seen by the EP during the reporting period. There are a few exceptions, such as Measure #112, Screening Mammography in the Preventive Measures Group, so be alert for these exceptions.

Items to consider when choosing Measure Groups:

  • Look at measures that are most relevant to your care/specialty and if they align within a Measure Group.
  • Determine what measures will yield your best performance.
  • What measures are easier to abstract data for reporting?
  • Depending upon the number of eligible patients, determine if it is easier to report 50% of eligible patients for the 9 individual measures, or if extracting data from 20 patient charts for 6 to 10 predefined measures is the better option.

NOTE:  MACRA MIPS in 2017 for the Quality Category has not identified Measures Groups as an option for reporting.  We will need to stay tuned in for the final ruling in November.

And, for those baseball fans out there, the “right off the bat”, certainly relates to this time of year.. MLB Playoffs!  Go…. “your” team!

The Registry Reporting Made Simple,  page 5 is a good place to start for educating on the Measure Group Reporting option.

Look at STEP 4: Choose which quality measures to report on the How to Get Started CMS webpage.  CMS has a table with links to documents for Measure Group reporting. One in particular is a zip file of documents pertaining to the 2016 PQRS measures groups titled 2016 PQRS Measures Groups Specifications Supporting Documents.
