With fluctuating gas prices, the war in Ukraine, a continuing pandemic and health care worker burnout, there is no question that this year has been difficult for many. It is more important now than ever to share love and appreciation with those around you. So, in honor of National Love People Day, here are five easy ways to brighten someone’s day.
Be like Brainerd
Acts of kindness have a funny way of multiplying. Just look at , where two years ago at a Dairy Queen drive-thru, someone paid for the person behind them. Then, that person paid for the person behind them. That simple act of kindness rippled for over two days, touching over 900 people in the process. So, the next time you go out for fast-food, try paying it “backward.” There is no telling how far your kindness may reach.
Donations Are like People
What do a blood donor, a caroler and a volunteer firefighter all have in common? Each one gives back to the community. This is an example of how each donation or act of service can look different. Just like people, they come in all shapes and sizes, and all have value. Think about what you have to give. You could donate canned goods or money to a food bank. You could give warm clothes and blankets to a homeless shelter. You could even donate some of your time to a nursing home, playing games and conversing with the residents. Once you start looking, you will see the possibilities are nearly endless!
Feast with Family
Acts of kindness do not have to be limited to strangers. You can show loved ones how much you care by treating them to a delicious dinner. If you normally eat at home, break the routine and go out to a restaurant you know they will enjoy. Or, if fast food is the standard meal, try your hand at preparing a feast at home. Home cooked meals are generally more nutritious, and there are many other benefits to eating together as a family!
Friends That Play Together
They say that friends are family you can choose, and what better way to show your friends love than inviting them out for a game night? We wrote earlier about the benefits of being social, but did you know that playing games also has a number of health benefits? Gather your friends and devote a night to a classic or new boardgame. If your friends prefer outdoor activities, meet up for a game of horseshoes, golf or tennis.
“Thanks” Giving Day
When was the last time you thanked the bagger at a grocery store? What about your mechanic? Your doctor? It may not seem like much, but a simple “thank you” can do wonders for someone’s day. Giving thanks is an easy way to tell someone that they make a difference, while also letting them know they matter. Gratitude is also one of the simplest ways to improve the satisfaction of your own life, with many scientifically proven physical and mental benefits. So what are you waiting for? Tell those around you how grateful you are and make every day a thanks-giving day!
