According to the American Optometric Association, low vision is a significant visual impairment that cannot be fully corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery. Low Vision Awareness Month is dedicated to raising awareness about the condition and the impact is has on people’s lives.

Low vision can affect people of any age, but it is more prevalent in older adults. Many medical conditions can cause low vision. Two of the most common conditions are high blood pressure and diabetes. Other leading causes of low vision include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.

Let’s discuss some of these medical conditions that cause low vision, their symptoms and how they can be managed.

Hypertensive retinopathy

When the force of blood against artery walls is too high, that is high blood pressure, or hypertension. Over time, hypertension can damage the blood vessels in your eye, leading to vision loss, or hypertensive retinopathy. This condition can cause the blood vessels in your eye to narrow and can damage the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye that sends visual signals to the brain.

If left untreated, hypertensive retinopathy can progress to more severe vision loss, including blindness. Properly treating and managing high blood pressure can reduce the risk of vision loss. People with hypertension should get regular eye exams to monitor for any signs of eye damage.

Diabetic retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness in adults. Diabetes affects how your body uses glucose, a type of sugar that is the main source of energy for your body’s cells. If left uncontrolled, high blood sugar can damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy. This condition can cause swelling, leakage and abnormal growth of blood vessels in the retina.

Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy include

blurred or distorted vision,

seeing floaters or dark spots,

difficulty seeing at night.

The best way to manage diabetic retinopathy is to control blood sugar levels through diet, exercise and medication and to get regular eye exams.

Age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic and progressive disease that affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for central vision. AMD causes blurred or distorted vision and can lead to vision loss in the central part of the visual field. There are two types of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD is the most common and progresses slowly, while wet AMD progresses quickly and can cause severe vision loss in a short period.

Symptoms of AMD include

blurry or distorted vision,

difficulty seeing in low light,

a dark or empty area in the center of the visual field.

There is currently no cure for AMD, but treatment options include lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and exercise, and medications to slow the progression of the disease.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. Your optic nerve transmits visual information from your eye to your brain. The most common type of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma, which develops slowly and often goes unnoticed until significant vision loss has occurred. Other types of glaucoma include angle-closure glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma.

Symptoms of glaucoma include

gradual loss of peripheral vision,

tunnel vision,

difficulty adjusting to darkness.

Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent vision loss. Treatment options include eye drops, oral medications, laser surgery and traditional surgery.

Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which can cause blurry or hazy vision, decreased color vision and sensitivity to light. Cataracts are common in older adults but can also occur in younger individuals due to injury, medications or medical conditions such as diabetes.

Cataracts can be treated with surgery to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is a common and safe procedure that can improve vision significantly.

While a variety of medical conditions can cause low vision, it can also be a natural part of the aging process. As we get older, our eyes change, making it more difficult to see clearly. We may not be able to focus on objects close to us, or we may lose some of our peripheral vision. We also might experience decreased sensitivity to contrast and color.

If you are experiencing any changes in your vision, schedule an appointment with an eye care professional right away. Low vision specialists can assess your vision and offer customized solutions to help manage any vision loss.

You can also make a few changes to manage low vision and improve your daily life:

Improve lighting: Increase the amount of light around your home by using brighter bulbs, adding lamps or using task lighting.

Use contrast: Use high-contrast colors, such as black and white, to make it easier to see objects. For example, some people paint the edges of their stairs a different color than the stairs to see them better and keep from tripping or falling.

Reduce glare: Talk with your eye doctor about getting an anti-glare coating on your glasses. You can also install blinds or curtains to reduce sunlight and avoid shiny surfaces.

Use assistive devices: Several assistive devices are available to help manage low vision, such as magnifiers, telescopes and screen readers. Software programs and mobile apps can help with reading and navigating your surroundings.

Stay active: Regular exercise can help manage the conditions that cause low vision, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Staying active also improves your overall health and well-being.

Seek support: Join a support group or talk to a counselor to connect with others who have low vision. You can learn coping strategies for dealing with the emotional and psychological impact of living with low vision.

Quit smoking: Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of your body. If you smoke, you can develop serious eye conditions that can cause vision loss or blindness.

By Mountain-Pacific Quality Health March 1, 2023 Low vision affects millions of people worldwide.
