Healthy Lung Month is a good time to face the dangers of smoking and commit to quitting.<\/p>\n<p>Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and many other respiratory issues. Cigarette smoke contains thousands of harmful chemicals, many of which cause damage to your lungs, heart and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/quit-smoking\/smoking-facts\/health-effects\/smoking\">nearly every other organ in your body.<\/a> Inhaling these toxins harms not only the smoker, but also those exposed to secondhand smoke.<\/p>\n<p>Quitting smoking is the biggest step you can take towards protecting your lungs from harm and disease, but it can also be the most difficult. Nicotine addiction is powerful, possibly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/risk-prevention\/tobacco\/why-people-start-using-tobacco.html\">more so than alcohol or opiate addiction<\/a>. Smoking is also a common coping mechanism for stress and anxiety. These challenges can prevent many from trying to quit.<\/p>\n<p>But there are ways to overcome these hurdles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) options like nicotine patches and gum can help you reduce withdrawal symptoms, making it easier to quit.<\/li>\n<li>Counseling and support groups help address the psychological aspects of addiction. They can offer strategies to manage stress and cope without smoking.<\/li>\n<li>Many medications can help you quit. Talk with a health care professional about what medication options might be right for you.<\/li>\n<li>Engage in healthy activities, like choosing healthy foods, exercising and practicing mindfulness, to help you better manage stress, reduce cravings and improve your overall well-being.<\/li>\n<li>Tell your family and friends you are quitting. Their support and encouragement could make all the difference!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Healthy Lung Month is the perfect time to plan your journey to quit smoking.
