According to the Alzheimer\u2019s Association, it is a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory, thinking skills and the ability to carry out simple tasks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzint.org\/get-involved\/world-alzheimers-month\/\">World Alzheimer\u2019s Month<\/a>, observed every September, is dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer\u2019s disease and supporting those affected by it.<\/p>\n<p>Common early symptoms include memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, confusion and trouble with spatial relationships. As the disease progresses, mood changes such as depression and irritability can happen. If you notice these signs, seek medical advice early, as interventions can help slow the progression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk Factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the exact cause of Alzheimer\u2019s is still unknown, certain risk factors are known to increase the likelihood of developing Alzheimer\u2019s. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Age:<\/strong> The risk increases significantly after the age of 65.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Genetics:<\/strong> Family history can play a role in developing the disease.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lifestyle:<\/strong> Poor cardiovascular health, lack of exercise, smoking and an unhealthy diet may increase the risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Head injuries:<\/strong> A history of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/health-information\/disorders\/traumatic-brain-injury-tbi\">traumatic brain injury<\/a> has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Managing Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While there is no cure for Alzheimer\u2019s, several strategies can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medications:<\/strong> Some drugs may help slow cognitive decline or temporarily reduce symptoms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Healthy lifestyle:<\/strong> Regular physical activity, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heart-disease\/in-depth\/heart-healthy-diet\/art-20047702\">heart-healthy diet<\/a> and mental stimulation can improve brain health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supportive environment:<\/strong> Creating a safe and structured environment helps reduce confusion and anxiety for people with Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/help-support\/caregiving\"><strong>Caregiver support<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Caring for someone with Alzheimer\u2019s can be emotionally and physically demanding. Support groups, counseling and respite care can offer relief and guidance for caregivers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer\u2019s disease, reach out to a health care provider for a proper diagnosis and guidance on next steps.<\/p>\n<p>World Alzheimer\u2019s Month is a reminder that, while Alzheimer\u2019s can be challenging, early intervention, proper care and community support can make a significant difference.
