However, as men age, their testosterone levels go down, and they can have some of the same symptoms—which can lead to severe health issues. This drop in testosterone often affects men ages 40 to 55 and is sometimes referred to as male menopause or hypogonadism.

As we round out Men’s Health Month it’s important to talk about testosterone and the role it plays in men’s health. While low testosterone (low T) affects around 13 million men in the United States, the good news is it can be treated!

What does testosterone do?

While testosterone is considered the male hormone, it is found in women too, but in smaller amounts. Testosterone production starts to rise during puberty and continues until around age 30. This hormone not only plays a large role in sperm production and sex drive, but also affects bone and muscle mass, red blood cell production, mood and endurance.

What causes low testosterone?

Testosterone levels decrease as a normal part of aging. The decline usually starts after the age of 30 and continues at a rate of about one percent per year. The older the man, the more likely he is to have low T. Other factors besides age can contribute to a drop in testosterone levels.

These factors include

injury to the testicles,

pituitary gland problems,

cancer treatments,

certain medications,

chronic kidney or liver disease,

substance abuse,

obesity,

stress.

What are the symptoms of low T?

A normal range of testosterone for men is between 250 and 1,100 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dl). Men with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dl may have low T symptoms. These symptoms may include loss of sex drive and/or erectile dysfunction, mood changes, hair loss, fatigue, loss of muscle and/or bone mass, weight gain, hot flashes and a larger belly.

Is having low testosterone dangerous?

If left untreated, low T can cause long-lasting health conditions. Some of these conditions include osteoporosis and loss of muscle mass, which can lead to injury. Not only can bones and muscles become weak, but men with low T can struggle with their weight, mainly the deep belly fat that forms around organs and increases the risk for heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

How is low T treated?

Men who notice symptoms should make an appointment to see a doctor. The doctor will draw blood to check testosterone levels. If tests determine low T, the next step is to discuss treatment options. Therapy is available in many forms, including topicals such as gels, creams and patches; injections and pellets that are implanted under the skin.

What are the benefits of testosterone therapy?

Every man responds differently to testosterone therapy, but men who undergo therapy often report

a boost in energy levels,

increased sex drive and improved erections,

weight loss,

better mood,

more energy and enthusiasm,

increased bone density and muscle mass.

Are there risks or side effects of treatment?

Just like with any prescription medication, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can have side effects. While results vary, side effects could include skin reactions like rashes or irritation at the application site and acne breakouts. More serious side effects are increased risk of heart attack or stroke, prostate issues, sleep apnea and blood clots. Taking testosterone if your levels are normal is not helpful and could be dangerous. Check with your provider.

Are there natural ways to boost or maintain testosterone levels?

The most effective way to avoid illness and raise testosterone is to exercise and maintain a healthy weight. Men who exercise regularly tend to have higher testosterone levels, while men who are overweight often have low T levels. Adopting and following a healthy, balanced diet can also improve T levels. A healthy diet includes foods rich in vitamin D and zinc (tuna, low-fat milk with vitamin D, egg yolks and black beans), lean proteins and healthy fats. Besides helping maintain T levels, these foods also improve heart health.

Getting control of hormone levels takes commitment. Men should be honest with their doctor about symptoms, make physical activity a part of their daily routine, ask for help when feeling down and have realistic expectations. Most importantly, men must remember they are not alone! Low T is common, and finding the right treatment plan can help make sure symptoms do not return.

Men’s Health Month: Testosterone 101 By Mountain-Pacific Pacific Quality Health July 1, 2021 Hot flashes, fatigue and weak bones are usually symptoms of menopause in women.
