Remote Patient Monitoring
Remote patient monitoring (RPM) uses digital technology to collect medical information from patients while they are at home and safely and securely transmits it electronically to a patient’s health care providers for monitoring, assessment, interventions and recommendations. How does it work?
- The patient collects the information using connected devices or mobile applications that can track blood pressure, blood sugar (glucose) levels, oxygen levels (pulse oximetry), weight and sometimes even heart rhythms.
- Then the patient’s health care provider monitors the information, either at the provider office or using a clinical monitoring center.
RPM is quickly advancing as a method of delivering health care and will likely expand to be part of health care for a lot of patients and providers.
