\nThe Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services contracts with Mountain Pacific to help meet the transportation needs of people with Medicaid. Medicaid may pay for patients to get to their health care provider or other health care services, if they have no other way to get there. Mountain Pacific also confirms appointments and services are kept.
\nDifferent rules apply to different kinds of transportation, like ambulances, taxicabs, buses, wheelchair-accessible vans or personal vehicles.

\nAmbulance Transport
\nPeople with Medicaid should only use ambulances when there is an emergency, or they may have to cover the cost themselves. Medicaid members can sometimes use an ambulance for non-emergency cases, but this kind of use requires authorization before the travel takes place. Mountain Pacific reviews a patient\u2019s use of an ambulance to make sure it was medically necessary and appropriate for the patient\u2019s travel.<\/p>\n
Personal Transport
\nIf a Montanan with Medicaid travels for health care purposes, either by private car, taxicab, bus, van or some other personal or commercial vehicle, Medicaid may cover the travel, including mileage and per diem. Travel has to be authorized before the service. Mountain Pacific staff preauthorize this transportation to Medicaid-covered appointments.<\/p>\n
Out-of-State Travel
\nMedicaid may provide travel funds if a health care service is not available in Montana.<\/p>\n
Closest Site of Service
\nMedicaid travel assistance is limited to the closest site of service, based on provider licensure and certification. Montanans with Medicaid may choose to travel to a farther location and accept the reduced reimbursement to the closer site.<\/p>\n
