2015 CEHRT Promoting Interoperability Requirement for 2019

July 10, 2019

Beginning this electronic health record (EHR) reporting year (2019), all promoting interoperability (PI) program participants are required to use a 2015 edition of certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT). The 2015 CEHRT is intended to move to more up-to-date standards and functions that better support interoperable exchange of health information and improve clinical workflows. Your facility would not be able to attest to PI and could potentially be subject to a negative Medicare payment adjustment if your facility does not upgrade to the 2015 CEHRT.

2015 CEHRT Requirement to meet PI

  • The 2015 Edition CEHRT did not need to be in place by January 1, 2019 but must be used for the entire EHR reporting period of any continuous, self-selected 90-day period.
  • The 2015 Edition CEHRT functionality must be in place by the first day of the EHR reporting period and the product must be certified to the 2015 Edition criteria by the last day of the EHR reporting period.

Prevention of Information Blocking Attestation Statement

In addition to using the 2015 Edition CEHRT, during attestation submission your facility must attest to certain statements to demonstrate you have not knowingly and intentionally acted to limit or restrict the compatibility or interoperability of your CEHRT. For more details on information blocking, review this fact sheet.
