Providers Practicing in More Than One Location

October 17, 2016
Written by Patty Kosednar

Eligible providers who practice in multiple locations must take some additional steps in order to successfully participate in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive programs (meaningful use).

The meaningful use program is measured/tracked at the provider level and not the practice level.  So if a provider practices in more than one location (with a certified EHR), they must combine the meaningful use data from all eligible locations and use this combined data to attest to meaningful use.

The steps you might take if you have providers that practice in more than one location are:

  1. Determine if each location where they practice has a certified EHR
  2. Confirm that at least 50 percent of their patient encounters occurred at those locations
  3. Add the numerators and denominators calculated by each certified EHR system in order to arrive at an accurate total for the numerator and denominator of the measure
  4. Combine data for public health measures and CQMs across locations where possible, and report on measures and CQMs from the location with the greatest number of patient encounters when other locations chose different measures and/or CQMs

If you have providers practicing in more than one location with a certified EHR, I recommend that you contact the other location(s) as soon as possible and request your provider’s current meaningful use data. Once you have the data from all locations, you can combine the data to determine their current performance on all the meaningful use objectives and requirements.

Once you know their current performance on all the measures, you can work on an action plan for the items below the needed performance.
