National Immunization Awareness Month

Every year thousands of Americans suffer from diseases and sicknesses that vaccinations could have prevented.

Vaccinations are tested to determine safety and effectiveness before they are approved and serious, long-term side effects are rare. Having the right immunizations may not only prevent certain ailments, but may help stop the spread of diseases and illnesses to your friends and family.

Mountain-Pacific and our partners encourage you to take the vaccination test and talk to your health care professional to find out which immunizations you should have depending on your age and medical conditions. Below are some general guidelines and recommendations.

Immunizations for adults 60 years or older:

• Influenza (flu) – More than 50 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations occur in people 65 years and older, according to a 2013 Harvard University study. A flu vaccine is recommended every year.
• Shingles – Shingles is a painful rash that develops on your skin. The shingles vaccine is a one-time shot recommended for adults 60 years and older.
• Pneumococcal disease – Pneumococcal bacteria can spread from one person to another through close contact. It can cause serious infections. It can lead to hospitalization, other complications and even death. Talk to your doctor to see what pneumococcal vaccine(s) you need and when you need it/them.
• If you have medical conditions please consult your doctor to find out if there are other vaccinations you should receive.

Immunizations are an easy way to protect your health and prevent spreading certain diseases and illnesses. Be proactive and see your health care provider to learn which vaccines you need.
