New Name for MU: Promoting Interoperability (PI)

The Medicare/Medicaid Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive program, formerly known as Meaningful Use, will now be known as Promoting Interoperability (PI). The new focus of the PI program is to be more flexible and less burdensome for providers and to improve interoperability and patients’ access to their health information.

The proposed changes to the PI program will NOT start until reporting year 2019. The high-level, proposed changes for PI will include (starting in 2019):

• Eligible participants must use 2015 edition of EHR certification
• Reporting period will be 90 days
• Changes to the clinical quality measure (CQM) sets to align with inpatient quality reporting (IQR) and core measure changes
• More emphasis on measures that require interoperability, exchange of health information between providers and patients

For the 2018 reporting period, eligible hospitals and professionals will continue to attest to the same requirements as they did in 2017. Please access our recent blog post for more detailed information about 2018 reporting.
