Top Four Questions Montanans Ask about Medicaid Eligibility

Medicaid provides low-cost health insurance to millions of Americans. And with Montana’s recent Medicaid expansion, more people can get coverage. Here are the top four questions people ask about Medicaid eligibility.

Am I eligible?
Visit the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (MT DPHHS) website to find out if you qualify for Medicaid. Click on the “Am I Eligible?” tab (top, right corner of the screen) to answer a series of questions. After working through the questions, the website will tell you if you qualify for Medicaid.

Where do I apply?
You can apply online by going to the MT DPHHS website and clicking on the “Apply for Assistance” tab. The state has 45 days to approve your application. If you are asked to provide more information, you can request an extension. You can also apply using a paper application (but expect the approval to take longer).

What information is needed to apply?
Before you apply, get together the required documents and information. This is often the most challenging part of the application process. Below is a list of likely required information:

  • Pay stubs
  • Your bills
  • Checking/savings accounts information
  • Cars/mobile homes/house information
  • Health care policies/life insurance policies
  • Medicare/Supplemental security information
  • Social security number
  • Self-employment financial records
  • Insurance and worker’s compensation records
  • Veterans Administration benefits/pensions information
  • Value of certificate of deposits, stocks and bonds
  • Value of burial policies
  • Value of trusts
  • Amount of loans, gifts or contributions
  • Balance of individual Indian money account
  • Information on pregnancy and due date
  • School enrollment/history information

Need help?
There is help available through Montana’s Field Offices of Public Assistance. You can also call the Montana Public Assistance Helpline at 1-888-706-1535 for Medicaid enrollment help.

For more information about Medicaid in Montana, visit the MT DPHHS website.
